Offline procedures: running with no Wi-Fi or cell signal

Short answer. Inside buildings, basements and electrical rooms, there is often no signal. ICARUS Ops EES lets crews sync assigned work wherever there is signal, then run procedures in areas with or without signal. When the work is done, they sync everything back to the ICARUS Ops web portal from anywhere with a connection.

Definition. An offline-first procedure app is one designed to work fully without a connection, and to sync records when a connection returns.

Why there is no signal

Steel, concrete and sealed electrical rooms block radio signals, and new buildings often have no network installed yet. Incidents can also knock out signal across the affected area, leaving crews without access to the procedures, including emergency procedures, they may need.

ICARUS Ops EES keeps emergency procedures on each device for instant access with no signal.

The sync-work-sync workflow

  1. Sync in the trailer. Crews sync at the start of each shift to get the day’s assignments.
  2. Work in the building. Procedures run with no signal.
  3. Sync again. Back in coverage, every time-stamped step, photo and sign-off uploads to complete the audit trail.

What to check in an offline procedure app

  • The procedure is stored on the device.
  • Every step can be recorded offline.
  • Photos are stored on the device until sync.
  • Sync status is clear to the user.

Practical tips

  • Sync before you walk in.
  • Charge devices daily.
  • Carry a power bank and a wireless charger. Most devices no longer have a swappable spare battery.
  • Assign devices to crews so they take ownership and maintain the devices.

Where ICARUS Ops fits

The ICARUS Ops Error Elimination System (EES) field apps are native Android and iOS apps that run procedures with no signal. Emergency procedures stay on the device permanently, and records upload to the cloud on sync for review in the ICARUS Ops web portal.
